Hot stamping on money packets: how gold foil works, what it costs and which artwork suits it

For hot stamping printing in Malaysia, a heated metal die presses metallic foil onto the paper, so the foil bonds only where the die touches, with no ink. On a Gifthxs money packet, gold or silver stamping is RM728 for 500 pieces in one design, RM240 more than the plain RM488 order.

If a buyer has asked for "something with gold on it", start with the artwork, because that decides whether foil will work.

How hot stamping works

Picture a thin ribbon of foil laid over a sheet of card. A metal die, cut in the shape of your logo or pattern, is heated and pushed down onto the foil. The heat activates an adhesive on the foil (the foil has four layers: a polyester carrier film, a release coat, the metallic colour layer and the adhesive) and the pressure transfers the metallic layer to the paper. When the die lifts, the foil that was under it stays on the sheet and the rest of the ribbon stays on its carrier film. That transfer gives gold foil stamping its sharp, reflective edge, pressed very slightly into the card.

The pause between the die touching down and lifting off is called dwell time. If it is too short, the foil does not bond; hold it too long and fine lines fill in and go fuzzy, which is why thin strokes are the hardest thing to stamp cleanly.

Spot UV vs hot stamping vs plain print

Buyers usually meet hot stamping while choosing between three finishes. Here is how they sit on our money packets, using the 2027 single-design prices.

Finish 500 pcs 1,000 pcs 2,000 pcs What you see
Normal, no finishing RM488 RM688 RM988 Full colour print on soft-touch laminated 157gsm art paper
Spot UV RM688 RM1,038 RM1,428 Glossy raised coating on chosen elements
Gold or silver stamping RM728 RM1,068 RM1,588 Metallic foil that catches the light

Spot UV costs less than stamping at every quantity in the table: RM40 less at 500 pieces, RM30 less at 1,000 and RM160 less at 2,000. Stamping is the more premium look. Pick on the effect you want, then check the price gap at your quantity.

All prices above are for one design. Two, four and five design packs have their own price tables, so ask for the right one before you budget. West Malaysia delivery is free. East Malaysia delivery is an add-on that checkout calculates once you enter a Sabah, Sarawak or Labuan address.

What artwork stamps well

Bold shapes work best. Company monograms, zodiac outlines, borders and a single line of greeting in a medium-weight typeface all stamp cleanly. Trouble comes from hairline strokes, tiny serif text and large solid blocks with delicate detail beside them.

Our terms allow hot stamp registration to vary by up to 0.5mm, which is why a design that depends on foil sitting exactly inside a printed outline can look slightly off. Give foil inside a printed shape some breathing room; a standalone foil element barely shows the shift.

Run this three-question foil check before you send artwork:

  1. Bold enough? Can you read the foil element from an arm's length away?
  2. Clear enough? Does the foil sit more than 0.5mm clear of any printed outline?
  3. Vector? Is the logo an AI or SVG file? A JPG or PNG logo can be traced to vector for a small additional fee, and a die needs clean edges.

Decide which parts of the packet get foil before you design the rest. Gold on red reads as festive, while silver on deep navy looks more corporate.

Money packet gold stamping: what it adds

Our money packets are 170mm by 82mm on 157gsm art paper with a soft-touch lamination included in the base price. Gold or silver stamping goes on top as an optional finish. It is the most premium finish we offer for the packet itself.

We explain the paper choice in why we print money packets on 157gsm art paper with a soft-touch finish.

Money packets take 10 to 14 working days from artwork approval, stamped or not. Public holidays fall inside that window, so count working days and not calendar days. Chinese New Year 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February according to Malaysian public holiday listings for 2027, so confirm artwork between 12 and 26 December 2026. Hari Raya Aidilfitri is expected on 10 March 2027, pending the gazette, so confirm Raya artwork between 13 and 27 January 2027.

The Premium Box, where foil does most of the work

The Premium Box is a 250gsm card box with gold or silver stamping, sold as an add-on to a packet order. For Chinese New Year the box comes in red, gold or cream at one price. Raya boxes are cream.

The box is priced on top of the packets. For a single design it adds RM495 at 1,000 pieces, RM650 at 2,000 and RM780 at 3,000. It is not offered at 500 pieces for a single design. If budget allows only one stamped item, stamp the box, because it is what the recipient sees first.

Before you approve a stamped order

These terms apply to every Gifthxs order, stamped or not, but they matter more when foil is involved.

The free online proof checks placement only. It does not check colour accuracy, so ask what the proof will and will not tell you before you approve it.

No order can be cancelled once it is processed, so approve only once the logo is final.

Printed colour can drift by up to 5 percent from the digital proof under our terms, so do not build a design that depends on an exact colour match.

A design that uses your brand foil and your own layout is a money packet printing Malaysia job, and it starts with sending the logo file and a rough idea of where the foil should go.

Is hot stamping printing right for your order?

Run the three-question foil check on your artwork first. If the logo or a festive motif passes all three and is the hero of the packet, hot foil stamping is worth the extra over plain print. Skip it when the design is photographic or full of fine detail, or when the budget is tight and spot UV would give a similar lift. To settle quantity, why our MOQ is 500 pieces and what that gets you explains where the tiers come from.

Frequently asked questions

What is hot stamping in printing?

Hot stamping presses a heated metal die onto metallic foil so the foil bonds to paper only where the die touches. The result is a shiny metallic area with no ink involved.

How much does gold or silver stamping cost on a money packet?

For one design, gold or silver stamping is RM728 at 500 pieces, RM1,068 at 1,000 pieces and RM1,588 at 2,000 pieces. Two, four and five design packs are priced separately, so ask for the table that matches your order.

How long does a stamped money packet order take?

Money packets take 10 to 14 working days from artwork approval. Count working days only, and allow for public holidays that fall inside the window.

What file should I send for a foil logo?

Send a vector file such as AI or SVG. A JPG or PNG logo can be traced to vector for a small additional fee, because the die needs clean edges.

Is hot stamping better than spot UV?

Hot stamping gives a metallic shine and spot UV gives a glossy raised coating for less money; pick on the effect you want. Spot UV costs less at every quantity, and at 1,000 pieces on one design the two are only RM30 apart.

Does hot stamping match the artwork exactly?

Hot stamping can shift by up to 0.5mm from the artwork, so leave a little clearance if foil sits inside a printed outline.
